Chevrolet Vortec Bow-Tie Cast Iron Cylinder Heads

Talk about awesome torque and horsepower all in one cylinder head. The 185cc Vortec Bow-Tie is the best "under 200cc intake runner head" on the market. It is excellent for circle track, street, drag racing & marine applications.

The Vortec Bow-Tie head has a superior chamber design. We weld the spark plug cooling holes & angle mill this head to 46ccs.  This will give you 13.5 to 1 compression with a flat top 355.

With our CNC Sportsman Porting or "UnderCover Porting", the 185cc head will support engines making over 540 horsepower with incredible throttle response.  This is one of our favorite cylinder heads because it just works well.

The Vortec Bow-Tie heads are beefed-up Vortec passenger car heads with better air flow, a thicker deck, both center-bolt and outside valve cover bolt patterns and the Vortec and conventional intake manifold bolt patterns. They are available with 185cc or 225cc intake ports and have straight plugs.

A stock 185cc Vortec Bow-Tie head will flow 234 cfm intake and 164 on the

exhaust. With our “UnderCover Porting”, the intake flow improves to 252 cfm and the exhaust will reach 184 cfm.  The 185cc head works well on cars with a 2 or 4 bbl carb that need instant throttle response and a flat torque curve.

Racers love the 185 Vortec Bow-Tie head because it produces such a flat torque curve.  Meaning, it will usually produce the same torque at 6,300 as it did at 4,000 rpm.  Translation: Instant throttle response whenever you need it.

The 225cc head will flow 266 cfm intake and 164 cfm exhaust in stock form. With our “UnderCover Porting”, the air flow will improve to 286 cfm intake and 192 cfm exhaust. This head is recommended for higher rpm and larger motors vs. the 185 cc Vortec Bow-Tie. It works well on lighter cars that run 7,000 to 8,500 rpm.

We can also perform a variety of "disguise packages" to make the Vortec Bow-Tie heads look like other cylinder heads.  

Cast Iron Intake Manifolds for the Vortec Bow-Tie Heads: Because of the taller intake port design on the Vortec Bow-Tie heads, our #201V-M & #401V-M Vortec Marine intakes are the only cast iron intake manifolds that will fit these heads. The passenger car intakes - Chevrolet 2 barrel & Q-Jet style - do not have enough material on top of the intake manifold to seal the intake gasket. If you must run a standard passenger car 2 barrel or Q-Jet intake, the intake ports can be welded.

Aluminum Intake Manifolds for the Vortec Bow-Tie Heads: The Edelbrock 2814 intake will fit the Vortec Bow-Tie heads. Depending on track rules and requirements, other intakes like the Edelbrock 7116 or 2925 Super Victor will also fit. In each case, it is critical that the intake manifold properly fits the heads.

Vortec Bow-Tie Cylinder Head & Intake Manifold Packages: After the heads are surfaced to the required cc's, we will bolt the heads onto a block. The intake manifold is then checked and machined for both correct port alignment to the head ports and proper mechanical fit to the heads. Fitting the intake manifold to the heads is included at no additional charge with all of our head / intake manifold combinations.
