Complete Head Assemblies

Our complete cylinder head assemblies include the following machining operations and superior quality parts:

  • Pressure testing: All of our heads are pressure tested. You might ask, “Why do brand new heads have to be pressure tested?”. The answer is because 13% of the brand new castings we have tested over the past few years leak right out of the box. This holds true for all the manufactures. So we pressure test all heads before we work on them so you do not get a leaker.
  • All of our heads have the valve guides honed for proper clearance with a Sunnen diamond valve guide honing system. Most of the heads come from the factory with the guide clearance a bit too tight. After the guides are honed, the heads receive a performance, flow bench developed valve job.
  • Ferrea 5000 & 6000 series valves are standard on all complete head assemblies. Valves can be upgraded to Ferrea Competion Series valves, Ferrea Hollow Stem, 7mm or 5/16” stem valves. Titanium valves are also available.
  • Surfacing; All complete heads will be surfaced with a flat cut to your specifications. Angle milling is an extra cost option if a smaller combustion chamber size is needed.
  • Pushrod holes will be opened on heads that have not had this done from the factory.
  • Valve springs: We use either Isky, Crane or Competition Cams valve springs. The valve springs are matched to your camshaft specifications, and is some cases track rules. We need the exact requirements of the actual camshaft part number to match the correct valve springs. The addition of high seat and open pressure roller springs, like the Isky 9965 series, is an upgrade.
  • Hardened spring locators are installed on most of our heads. As part of the proper valve spring setup to insure maximum spring life, we install hardened spring locators. Spring locators will keep the spring more stable and help heat transfer to the water jacket. The spring pockets are accurately machined to accept the locator. Hardened spring shims are installed under the locators to adjust the valve spring installed height.
  • We use ARP rocker studs, - 3/8” or 7/16”.
  • Valve tip heights are set to within .015”. This may require us to use different length intake and exhaust valves. In some cases the valve tips will also be machined. These extra steps are especially critical when running a shaft rocker system. Setting the correct installed height, adjusting the valve length to insure correct rocker arm alignment and machining the spring seat to insure adequate spring pad thickness are critical operations to insure a quality cylinder head assembly.
  • Del West Super 7° chrome moly retainers and Super 7° locks are used on all 1.540” spring applications. When smaller valve springs are used, we install steel retainers and machined locks. Titanium retainers can be added at an additional cost. Teflon valve seals are used on the intake valves and O ring seals installed on the exhaust.
  • Accurate records are maintained on each set of heads, both bare and complete, for future reference. We often receive calls concerning heads that have been in service since the 1980's. With our system the records can be quickly referenced.
  • Confidentiality: We will only discuss the work performed to the heads with the permission of the person who purchased them. Customers’ names and their purchases will never be discussed with anyone except the original owner.
